Alyssa Haggstrom
MEMBER AT LARGE

Alyssa is a graduate of OCAD University, where she studied Environmental Design with a focus on landscape architecture. She is currently working as a Graphic Designer at BA Consulting Group, a role that has expanded into developing training materials and running training sessions for co-op students and new employees to support team cohesion and knowledge-sharing.
For the past ten years, alongside school and work, Alyssa has dedicated her time and passions to various side endeavours. Maintaining a freelance design practice, she has collaborated with a diverse range of clients seeking effective and creative visual solutions. Her projects have included cover art and animation for musicians, logo design for local businesses, marketing and visual communication for events and organizations, and residential landscape design. Across all her work, she explores how colour influences perception, accessibility, and engagement, shaping both storytelling and the way people experience digital, print, and built environments.
Since moving back to her hometown in 2023, Alyssa has immersed herself in painting and mixed-media work, allowing elements of the surreal to imbue her practice. Inspired by architecture and landscape, she plays with bending space and creating realms that pull the viewer into hidden corners and layered visual moments. Colour is a leading force in these artworks, building tension and harmony through contrasts and gradients. Alyssa has also embraced leadership opportunities, notably as one of four organizers of an artist residency that brought together 12 artists—muralists, illustrators, painters, designers, and musicians—for a two-week collaborative experience. The residency fostered connections between Canadian and international artists, notably linking the Canadian group to the arts community in Oaxaca, Mexico. This successful initiative deepened her passion for fostering creative communities and further sparked her desire to take on leadership roles in future collaborative and artistic projects.
Alyssa is eager to contribute to the Colour Research Society of Canada, especially within the Marketing and Communications and Student Awards subcommittees. With a background in graphic design and leadership in both professional and artistic settings, she is passionate about utilizing colour to enhance storytelling and engagement in visual media. She can assist with visual communication, ensuring the CRSC website remains up to date, and supporting social media efforts as needed to further promote the society’s mission. Additionally, she is excited to contribute to the Student Awards subcommittee by helping foster future talent and supporting the continued growth and diversity of the colour research community. She would love to connect the Society to Calgary’s vibrant art scene and to the students at the Arts University here, and to OCADU students, creating pathways for collaboration and growth. Furthermore, as a resident of Mohkinstsis Treaty 7 territory (Calgary), she is interested in exploring ways to build relationships with Indigenous communities in the region, learning from their rich and valuable cultures, should they be open to sharing. She looks forward to the event Muted: Indigenous Stories. Much appreciation for the opportunity to contribute through these focused areas and working alongside fellow members.
