The Brickworks by Lucy E.M. Black traces the aftermath of the Tay Bridge collapse in Scotland, 1879. The story follows Brodie Smith and Alistair Lamont, who end up in Buffalo and later set out to construct a brickworks factory in Braemore, Ontario. Colour weaves its way through the story and the coloured clays of Ontario make their way into the brickworks factory. Lucy will discuss the role of colour in her book, joined by Ontario-based clay artist and sculptor Mark Jaroszewicz, who travels around the province and incorporates coloured clays and soils into his artworks.



Lucy E.M. Black is a Canada-based writer and an educator. The stories of the young people whom she has worked with have shaped her professional life as well at that of her storytelling. Lucy studied creative writing at the undergraduate level and later earned her master’s…
